Prepaid Gift Cards.Aside from prepaid phone cards, Internet gaming cards, fare cards… there are prepaid cards that are used beyond the constrictions of transportation or Internet gaming, giving the cardholder the luxury and convenience to purchase what he needs with a single card. These prepaid cards can take the form of either Gift cards or Stored Value Cards. They are both prepaid in nature. A certain amount of money is deposited or "loaded" and the cardholder has a limit to how much he can spend. It gives the cardholder the security and the convenience of not carrying money or checks.Gift cards have somewhat replaced gift certificates in many places. It follows the thought: "Don't know what to buy and don't want to give cash?" and gives the recipient of the card the freedom to choose what he really wants for himself. Stored value cards are not exactly a credit card. Credit means a loan and these cards offer no credit by the card issuer. The cardholder spends money that has been "stored" on the card via his own prior deposit. The card itself doesn't "hold" the money but functions as an access device. These cards are similar to gift cards, but are issued with a credit card logo such as Visa. They can be used in all establishments where the Gift Card is valid and Store Value Credit Cards such as the Prepaid Visa Cards where VISA is accepted. Although most gift cards are now carrying the VISA logo, allowing it to be used in more places than how gift certificates would be limiting to one department store or shop. These cards are used through an EFTPOS (Electronic Fund Transfer at Point Of Sale) system. It is the technology that allows a retailer to directly debit a customer's bank account by using a debit card. The debit card, generally the same as an ATM card, is swiped through a reading device just like a credit card. The customer must enter his or her PIN number, generally requested once the amount of the sale has been entered into the EFTPOS device. They are faster, more efficient, and less expensive than paper check transactions. They are also said to be safer and more secure. A shopper need not have cash on hand, credit cards, or a checkbook to make a purchase. |
